CHAIRMANS CHAT

Well here it is 2021. Just when we thought it was safe to go back into the water , Covid sends us ‘son of Covid’. Hopefully Mrs Vac and Miss Cine will get us on the way to normality by the middle of the year. But at the moment lockdown seems to be the only way to keep Covid in check. We beekeepers are luckier than most as we can easily keep our distance when beekeeping , though at this time of year we can only read up on various topics , get our kit ready for the new year and check that our hives are in top condition. That is to see if they have stores by hefting the hive , if in doubt chose a clear and not to cold day and feed fondant , that the hives are free of under growth and most important that they are as dry as possible. It is hoped as the year progresses we will be having apiary meetings at the Bastonford training apiary which has performed well in 2020 with good strong colonies and a very nice honey harvest. Covid permitting we will be hosting an open day at the apiary to show people the workings of a beekeeper and to recruit new members. Regarding the Honey harvest we have been gifted a new 9 frame honey spinner by Bee Equipment Ltd. which we will put to good use this year with as many of us as possible taking part. The BBKA are trying to do some of the exams via Zoom so if you can negotiate the latest technology and want to expand your already extensive knowledge go to www.bbka.org.uk for more information.
